Norwegian police officers will be temporarily issued weapons on New Year’s Eve due to the growing threat of anti-Semitism. The kingdom’s police announced this in a press release on Sunday, December 31.
According to law enforcement agencies, the threat to Jewish and Israeli targets has increased throughout the country. However, for which ones exactly is not specified in the published release.
“Although there are no specific threats to Norway, the chief of police, taking all the circumstances into account, has decided to temporarily arm himself in order to ensure the highest possible preparedness during the New Year’s weekend,” – the document quotes Director of Emergency Preparedness Tune Vangen as saying.
It is noted that the right to bear arms will apply to the country’s police officers until midnight on January 1 inclusive.
The Norwegian Ministry of Justice approves the temporary arming of police officers in exceptional cases; as a rule, they serve unarmed.
