According to the agency, Aobu’s lawyer insisted that his client had a mental disorder, due to which he was delusional and did not fully understand what he was doing. Nevertheless, the Japanese was recognized as sane, and his actions were conscious. Even the defendant’s repentance did not help mitigate the sentence.
Let us remind you that the fire at the Kyoto Animation studio, known for such projects as K-On! and “The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya”, occurred on July 13, 2019. Aobu entered the building with 40 liters of gasoline and started a fire, which killed 36 people and injured 33 more. The criminal himself also received burns.
When the treatment ended, law enforcement officers arrested the arsonist. Aobu admitted his guilt, emphasizing that his targets were employees of the animation studio.
