According to media reports, Washington was alarmed by the North Korean leader’s rhetoric. American officials do not think he will decide to start a full-scale war, but expect a coup.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s turn towards open hostility worries US officials. However, this does not mean that he will start an all-out war. This was stated in the material of The New York Times dated January 25.
Unnamed US officials believe that the North Korean leadership’s tougher stance is “part of a pattern of provocation” and that their statements should be taken seriously. However, Washington does not foresee a risk of war in the near future.
It is assumed that Kim Jong-un may carry out “deadly” attacks to prevent rapid escalation of the conflict. Similar provocations have occurred before. There were subsequent casualties among soldiers and civilians, but after mutual bombardment the countries did not start a war.
US officials suspect the North Korean leader is “emboldened” by his strengthening partnership with the Kremlin. However, American ministries found no concrete signs that North Korea was preparing for hostilities or a major war.
One of the unnamed officials stated that the supply of artillery shells and ballistic missiles from North Korea to the Russian Federation shows that Kim Jong-un is no longer in the mood for war. If he were planning a major military operation, weapons stocks would be stockpiled rather than sold.
At the same time, the North Korean leader is likely confident in his ability to control any tensions. He has strengthened his military and diplomatic position, but Washington doubts he will dare to put the regime at risk. Thanks to its tests, the North Korean military has improved its ballistic missile production, and Kim Jong-un himself has established relations with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.
Let us recall that Bloomberg reported that friendship with Putin has become a new reason for Kim Jong-un not to start a war. Russia’s aggression against Ukraine is helping North Korea develop its own economy.
Bloomberg also reported that Putin has sent signals to the United States that he is ready to begin peace negotiations.
