The first soap opera broadcast in the USSR was “Slave Isaura.” For Soviet television viewers, the new format became a real revelation.

After the success of this series, the telenovela “The Rich Also Cry” began to be shown in the Soviet Union, she said REN TV culturologist Maria Vasilenok. Its premiere took place a month before the collapse of the USSR, but the show continued after 1991. The Mexican Veronica Castro, who plays the role of Marianna, became the number one star in Russia.

“In 1992, the leading actress from the series “The Rich Also Cry,” Veronica Castro, came to us. She wrote that she had never had such a reception anywhere. She had never been greeted like that in any country in the world. Everywhere (in Moscow. – Approx. REN TV), wherever she appeared, she was greeted by an enthusiastic crowd. There was even a small scandal at the Bolshoi Theater, where she was invited to the ballet “Swan Lake”. The spectators, seeing her in the box, began to applaud her standing. The start of the performance had to be postponed”,” the expert shared the details.

“Slave Isaura” has won millions of fans around the globe. In which country did fighting stop during the hours this series was shown? How did housewives stage a demonstration at Ostankino because of the TV series Santa Barbara? And how has the format of soap operas changed in modern times? Details about this and much more are in the “Unknown History” program with Boris Ryzhov. Watch it on Sunday, March 3, at 11:30 on REN TV.
