Stoltenberg: “They will not be free”: Presidential elections in Russia will not bring change in the Kremlin

According to the Secretary General of the Alliance, attempts by the Russian Federation to organize polling stations in the occupied territories of Ukraine are completely illegal and violate international law.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the presidential elections in the Russian Federation will not bring any changes in the Kremlin. He said this at a press conference in Brussels on Thursday (March 14).

He also emphasized that Russia’s attempts to hold elections in the regions temporarily occupied by Ukraine are completely illegal and violate international law.

The Secretary General of the Alliance added that free and fair elections are the basis of every democracy, but this will not be the case in the Russian Federation. As a result, according to him, “opposition politicians are in prison, some have been killed, many are in exile” and those who try to register as candidates are deprived of this right.

“So in fact, even before the elections, we can say that they will not be free and fair. And no one expects that the elections to be held in Russia this week will bring any changes in the Kremlin. And of course, Russian initiatives also depend on this. Stoltenberg said, “In the occupied regions of Ukraine “Organizing any part of the elections is absolutely illegal and violates international law,” he said.

Stoltenberg also stressed that Ukraine urgently needs military assistance and that NATO allies must “show political will” to provide the Armed Forces with everything they need. Additionally, the Secretary General of the Alliance stated that Ukrainian citizens “have not run out of courage, they have run out of ammunition.”

“Together we can give Ukraine what it needs, now we need to show the political will to do it. All members of the alliance must act quickly, every delay has real consequences on the battlefield in Ukraine. This is a critical moment. Letting Putin win is a big deal.” “It would be a historical mistake,” he concluded.

Let us recall that earlier during the briefing, Jens Stoltenberg said that NATO members should quickly provide additional military support to Ukraine in order to prevent possible negative consequences associated with a possible victory by Russia in the war.
