They ask my opinion militarization and what armed forces deal with public safety. Let’s talk about militarization. Let us clarify what we mean by such, in order to at least talk about the same thing.

According to the Spanish Dictionary, militarization is the act or effect of militarization; which, in turn, has three meanings: 1. To instill discipline or a warlike spirit. 2. Subject to military discipline. 3. Give the community a character or military organization.

I am referring to the militarized regimes that existed in American countries like Bolivia between 1964 and 1982; Argentina from 1976 to 1983; Uruguay from 1973 to 1984; Chile from 1973 to 1990. Paraguay from 1954 to 1989, Dominican Republic from 1930 to 1961, Peru from 1968 to 1980, Ecuador from 1972 to 1979 and Colombia from 1953 to 1957.

Mexico has been ruled by many generals and has survived several coups, but has actually survived only three military regimes: the last stage of the reign of Antonio López de Santa Anna; the last ten years of the Porfiriato and the ephemeral government of Victoriano Huerta after the assassination of Francisco I. Madero. Why do the Mexican right and left reject militarization? The right to the Christen war. They left because of the massacre of 1968 and the dirty war of the seventies of the last century.

What kind of military regime exists? According to the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (IDEA), 32 countries currently live under dictatorships that control 28% of the world’s population in various forms. One-party socialist republics like China, Vietnam or Cuba, absolute monarchies like Saudi Arabia and Qatar that will host this year’s World Cup, or failed democracies like Venezuela, Somalia or Libya.

What do I think about militarization? I strongly reject this. I do not agree that the martial spirit is a parameter of social behavior.

What do I think about the participation of the military in public safety? I disagree. I acknowledge that they are currently the federal government’s only resource capable of countering crime and supporting state and municipal governments. I believe that their participation should have constitutional support, as it was before 2024, it should be temporary, assessed and regulated by civil protocols.

Mexico becomes militarized? No. Power is exercised by a democratically elected civilian, there is freedom of expression and demonstration, and there is the rule of law. What we are seeing is an increase in military involvement in civilian activities. There are 80 thousand soldiers in the public security services. Military commanders build works and manage airports.

How to return the army to the barracks? Decrease in corruption and strengthening of the state and municipal police. We have a deficit of 200,000 trained, equipped and certified state police officers. This is what I think, what do you think? Politics is bronze.
