Ford and Purdue University are developing an ultra-fast charging cable

To advance the electrification of urban mobility, improvements in charging systems are needed. Ford sees it that way, and for this reason, in 2021, he worked on a recharge cable which has been patented and promises to revolutionize the field of electric mobility through a project that was carried out in conjunction with Purdue University.

This new charging method aims to improve cooling so that the cables can carry more power, which in turn means less waiting time when batteries are recharged.

“Chargers today are limited in how fast they charge an electric vehicle battery due to the danger of overheating. Faster charging requires more current through the wire,” explains Michael Degner, Head of Advanced Engineering and R&D at Ford.

The higher the current, the more heat must be removed in order for the cable to remain operational,” continued Degner.

The creation of the product was made possible thanks to the idea use liquid as active coolant. It manages to release more of the heat generated by the charging cable by changing its form from a liquid phase to a vapor phase.

This certainly represents great progress, and Looks like Ford wants to put everything on hold for now.since he did not reveal any details about this particular cooling element.

In this way, it will be possible to reduce the peaks of overheating in order to speed up the process of charging the battery. The Ford cable will mark a big step forward in terms of public urban mobility, as reducing refueling times for buses and large vehicles is a challenge that needs to continue to be worked on.

“Our laboratory has developed a solution for situations where the amount of heat generated exceeds the capabilities of current technologies,” say researchers from Purdue University.
