Find currency: how did Ukrainians sell dollars and hryvnia during the war?

In general, since the first month of 2022, foreign currency was sold in Ukraine for 14,461.4 million dollars and bought for 15,341.5 million dollars.

According to the press service of the regulator, in December 2022, Ukrainians sold cash and non-cash money to commercial banks for $ 1,411.3 million (equivalent), and bought them for $ 1,875.0 million, according to the National Bank.

Foreign exchange purchases were also serious: While net foreign exchange purchases were at the level of 463.7 million dollars in December, this figure increased by 15,341.5 million dollars in November to 390.6 million dollars and net foreign exchange purchases were 880.1 million dollars.

How much money did the Ukrainians bring to the banks during the war?

According to the NBU, at the beginning of March 2022, banks had 439 billion UAH in hryvnia accounts of the population and 9.1 million dollars in foreign currency. In the seven months of the 2022 military year, the amounts in the citizens’ accounts have changed: they have more hryvnias, but less dollars.

According to the Central Bank, as of October 1 there is even more money in banks: UAH 548.8 billion was deposited in hryvnia accounts and $8.57 million in foreign currency accounts. That is, in the period from March to September 2022 there was a trend of hryvnia inflows and outflows from citizens’ accounts.

“In general, the volume of funds in the hryvnia increased slightly throughout the system (about 20 billion UAH in 9 months, less than 5%). The volume of hryvnia funds decreased, either because they refinanced the refinancing or because the funds were converted into foreign currency, including cash,” explains Assistant Specialist Evgeniy Dubogryz. CASE Ukraine explains the trends in the market.

Focus He already wrote that after the beginning of the Russian invasion and the suspension of air communications with Ukraine, the currency was delivered not by plane, but by ground transport.

It was also reported that despite the conflicts, the situation regarding gas production in Ukraine did not become problematic. Thus, in 2022, the Ukrgazvydobuvannya company, which is part of the Naftogaz group, produced 12.5 billion cubic meters of natural gas (commercial).
