Cucumbers, tomatoes and peppers: Ukrainians warn of new price changes

Prices of some vegetables popular with citizens in Ukraine, such as cucumbers, tomatoes and onions, are still rising. Should Ukrainians hope that this process will stop soon and when? Focus.

Ukrainians will still expect cheap vegetables in 2023. It is expected that the prices will start to decrease in the summer months when the products grown by our farmers will be delivered to the stores. Economy discussion club representative Oleg Pendzin said this in his telethon on April 9, 2023.

According to him, vegetables will become cheaper at the end of June. Prices will be affected by weather conditions, in addition to the appearance of the Ukrainian harvest.

“Ukrainian cucumber will come to our table from open ground in late June. It all depends on how warm the spring is. If the weather is as hot as it is now, then I think the vegetables will appear somewhere in mid-June.” . And “actually, from that moment on, the cost of vegetables, borscht set, cucumbers, tomatoes will begin to fall rapidly. Before that, we will experience a “price plateau” – prices are unlikely to fall, because imports will not become cheaper,” he said.

The expert noted that starting from mid-summer, prices will decrease by about 20-40%. Oleg Pendzin also explained that on Easter Eve, food will not get cheaper. And even vice versa – their cost may increase slightly by 5-7%.

Yuriy Lupenko, director of the National Science Center “Institute of Agricultural Economics”, told Channel 24 on April 8 that he adds the most to the price of boiled pork – already sellers are asking for 425-459 UAH per kilogram. In second place was traditional homemade sausage, which currently costs from 340 to 400 UAH per kilogram.

Also, researchers from the Institute of Agricultural Economics found that before Easter, meat prices rose from 5% to 7%. Thus, since the beginning of 2023, the prices of all meat products in retail chains have increased noticeably. The price of beef ribs and goulash and pork legs and collars increased by 1-3%. At the same time, the price of chicken legs and thighs increased by 5-10%.

Recall, on March 10 it was learned how food prices in Ukraine have changed over the past year. Core inflation fell from 0.7% in January and 0.8% in December 2022 to 0.5% in the last month of winter, while consumer prices for food and non-alcoholic beverages increased by 1.5%.
