‘Many problems get in the way’: China won’t buy grain from Russia – Bloomberg

Beijing had previously claimed it would allow imports from all over Russia, but now has seen trade hampered by “phytosanitary regulations and shipping issues.”

China refused to buy Russian grain. This year, only 30,000 tons of 6 million tons of imported products belonged to Russia. Bloomberg writes about it today, May 22.

China buys large quantities of wheat, with total imports increasing by over 60% compared to last year. Although Beijing said last year it would allow imports from all over Russia, trade has been hampered by a number of issues, including phytosanitary regulations and transportation issues.

Wheat is an exception for trade between China and Russia. Beijing’s electricity and aluminum purchases soared as sanctions cut off supplies to the West.

In Russia, this fact worried. According to Dmitry Patrushev, Secretary of the Russian National Security and Defense Council, the future of wheat and meat supplies will likely be on the agenda as Russian government officials and leaders attend a business forum in China this week.

Recall that in March, journalists learned that since the beginning of the large-scale invasion of Ukraine by the Russian Armed Forces, China has sent drones worth more than 12 million dollars to Russia.

On May 18, China added the Russian Far Eastern port of Vladivostok as a transit hub for inland trade shipments.

Recall, on March 28, it was reported that China declared the “jurisdiction” of the Russian Federation oil and gas fields in the Pacific Ocean. The Ministry of Defense of the People’s Republic of China conducted regular military patrols in the part of the South China Sea under the responsibility of the Vietnam economic zone.
