“At first everything stopped”: How the war changed consumer sentiment of Ukrainians

According to experts, most Ukrainians buy tools, household appliances and goods for the army.

Ukrainians postponed the purchases last year with the idea that we would buy it when the war is over. Now the situation is changing dynamically and our citizens are beginning to remember pre-war consumer needs. Bankers and retailers talked about this issue at a roundtable held by the Finance Club.

“At first everything stopped completely, then the demand for basic needs, from diapers to household chemicals, began to revive. Then sales of ordinary goods gradually recovered, and sales of goods for the military began to grow strongly,” said Alexander Lapko, CEO of RozetkaPay. payment solution.

He noted that the retail sales structure in 2022 will be significantly affected by the disruptions. Now people buy mobile phones, tablets and home appliances.

“There was a period when energy independence was a priority, and products in this segment were the most popular,” Lapko recalled.

In turn, Igor Yarovoy, director of FUIB’s retail partnership sales department, confirmed that Ukrainians buy gadgets and household appliances mainly on credit: “The largest category, both before the war and now, is smartphones. There is also tablets. There is also an increase in demand for household goods: dishes machines, refrigerators.”

Analyzing the situation, he noted that last year Ukrainians postponed purchases with the thought that “the war will end and then we will update everything.”

“Many people are tired of postponing – they want to live now and are increasingly buying what is overdue. Therefore, for the segment of consumer loans, traditional products will be at the top,” said Igor Yarovoy.
