On the night of January 11, the 80th Golden Globe Film Awards took place in Hollywood. The flamboyant ceremony returned to air on NBC after last year’s boycott (when the organizers of the competition were accused of corruption and gender discrimination). The main triumph in 2023 was Steven Spielberg, who presented the autobiographical film Fabelmans. He received two awards at once – for the best drama film and directing.

Spielberg’s Triumph and the Underrated Avatar

Steven Spielberg’s “Fabelmana” won Best Drama Film. In it, the director spoke about his childhood, youth, and how he fell in love with cinema and came into the profession. The protagonist of the picture, the boy Sammy Fabelman, dreams of becoming a director and almost does not part with his camera. Young Sammy will have to face serious challenges – bullying at school, constant moving and discord between his parents. This film is a real confession of Spielberg: he decided to talk about his difficult childhood only after the death of his parents. Spielberg is called the main triumph of the Golden Globe – he also won the award for best director.

Film critic Sergei Sychev shared his impressions of Spielberg’s new film. He especially noted the successful selection of actors and impeccably written dialogues.

“Fabelmans” is an impeccable film, filled with nostalgia and childhood love for cinema, but at the same time recognizably autobiographical, with filigree dramaturgy, a magnificent ensemble cast and impeccable dialogues. It tells about an American Jewish family in the middle of the last century, where a boy dreams of making films from early childhood, while his parents are entangled in career troubles and a protracted love triangle. the film critic says.

Director Maxim Kulagin called Spielberg’s film the best in the last five years. But the competitor of “Fabelmanov”, the film “Avatar: The Way of Water” by James Cameron, was not appreciated, Kulagin believes.

Avatar: The Way of Water definitely deserves some technical award. I was lucky to see it in all its glory. This is a truly striking visual picture, no less than the first part. James Cameron is one of the last directors to make big-budget films. And “Avatar” is riddled with his personal pain for the preservation of nature, for what kind of people we are in terms of destroying ourselves and everything around, “ he said.

How “Banshee Inisherina” took three awards at once

Film critics call Banshee Inisherina a very significant film of 2023. At the “Golden Globe” he received three awards at once – “Best Comedy/Musical”, “Best Screenplay” (Martin McDonagh) and “Best Actor” (Colin Farrell). The picture tells about two old friends living on the Irish island of Inisherin. Suddenly, one of the friends decides that he no longer wants to communicate with a friend, because he is too boring and boring. After that, the men sort things out for a long time, and one of the friends announces a tough ultimatum. He threatens that if his former friend ever speaks to him, he will cut off his fingers.

“McDonagh has made only four films in twenty years, and all of them are super hits: “Low Down in Bruges”, “Seven Psychopaths”, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri” and now “Banshee”. This allows us to consider him one of the main Western directors of our time, although not everyone will like Banshee: he has too black humor, too paradoxical and complex plot”, – Sychev spoke about the author’s idea.

Film critic Nikolai Nikulin recalled that the acting duo of Colin Farrell and Brendan Gleeson reunited after the film “Lie Down in Bruges”, shot by the same McDonagh.

Which actors were recognized as the best

Cate Blanchett was named Best Drama Actress for her role as a female conductor, Lydia Tar. According to film critic Sychev, Blanchett perfectly got used to the role and played Tar “so believable that she is still unbelievable in her fiction.”

The film critic added that the acting nominations were pretty predictable. So, Austin Butler was awarded for the role of Elvis Presley in the movie “Elvis”. Zendaya won the Globe for the second season of Euphoria, and Jennifer Coolidge for the second season of The White Lotus. Lotus itself, which tells about the everyday life of vacationers in Sicily, was named the best mini-series. Kevin Costner (Yellowstone) was named Best Actor in a Miniseries, and Angela Bassett won Best Supporting Actor in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever.

Why the series “Wednesday” was not appreciated

However, the real sensation of the “Golden Globe” was that Tim Burton’s acclaimed series “Wednesday” and the lead actress Jenna Ortega did not receive a single award. In the fight for the title of “Best Television Series (Musical/Comedy)” picture about the Addams family bypassed the series “Abbott Elementary School”. And Kinta Brunson, who played the main role there, was recognized as the best actress.

“There were few surprises in all this, although not giving prizes to either Jenna Ortega, whose dance is taught by heart the whole world, or the TV series Wednesday itself is a gesture that is difficult to take unequivocally,” – says Sychev.

Film critic Nikulin noted with regret that Burton’s series at the Golden Globe was not appreciated.

“The appearance of Jenna Ortega (on the red carpet – approx. REN TV) is already news for any media. True, here’s a sensation – Jenna Ortega did not receive an award this year, “ says the expert.

Nikulin was also surprised that neither Taylor Swift, nor Rihanna, nor even Lady Gaga received a statuette in the Best Song nomination. The award was given to the song “Naatu Naatu” from the Indian film “RRR: Revolution Roars Nearby”.

“The organizers tried very hard to make sure that they stopped being criticized for the small representation of black actors. And now, stand-up comedian Jerrod Carmichael has already appeared on the stage as the host, who, of course, joked on this topic,” – said the film critic.

Second Chance for Golden Globes

Nikulin admitted that the Golden Globe ratings are falling every year. The reputation of the once prestigious film award has been tarnished by scandals, both corruption related to gifts from producers and gender related to inequality.

“Nevertheless, the stars make the weather. Firstly, the membership of the association has changed, and secondly, interest in the show is supported by the fact that industry stars appear at the awards. And, of course, Jessica Chastain in an extravagant dress in the form of a web, and Margot Robbie in a pink dress, like a barbie, and the appearance of Jenna Ortega is already news for any media, “ the film critic says.

According to Nikulin, in general, the 80th anniversary ceremony passed without surprises. He added that the Golden Globes are something like an Oscar rehearsal. Many people follow the awards to see what films are in the nominations and update their list of must-see films, the expert said.
