Estonian general: Discussion of sending NATO troops to Ukraine is a signal for the Russian Federation

According to Neeme Väli, European leaders continue to talk about how they can further support Kiev in the confrontation with the Kremlin. Moscow understands that the West is not ready to stop.

Talks that the West may send troops to Ukrainian territory are a sign for the Russian Federation. This was stated by Estonian reserve major general Neeme Väli, ERR reported.

According to him, recently European leaders have been actively discussing the issue of further support to Ukraine. One of the issues they raise concerns the possibility of sending NATO troops to Ukraine. This is how Moscow kind of gets a signal.

“This is, on the one hand, a good message for Europeans who are starting to get used to this war, and on the other hand, it is definitely a signal for Russia that Europe is ready to continue to help and contribute to Ukraine,” said Neeme Väli.

Separately, the Estonian reserve major general added that Europe has the opportunity to send its army to Ukraine, but the question is whether it makes sense. This is because Kiev has sufficient human resources and other support in the form of weapons and equipment supplies is expected from Western partners.

Neeme Väli continued: “The issue today is not that Ukraine lacks soldiers, but that it needs more equipment and weapons.”

Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas expressed the same opinion, stating that Ukraine needed ammunition the most, and European leaders agreed on this.

Let’s remember, on February 27, as French President Emmanuel Macron stated, it was reported that NATO was discussing the possibility of sending troops to Ukraine. According to him, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky’s request to strengthen support to Kiev has been heard, but a consensus on sending NATO troops has not yet been reached.

Polish President Andrzej Duda also expressed his opinion on this issue. According to him, at the meeting of the leaders of the Alliance and the EU the issue of providing further assistance to Ukraine was extremely urgent. The countries will decide for themselves how they will support Kiev in the conflict with the Russian Federation.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg later said that the Alliance did not plan to send troops to Ukraine. According to him, the allies provide Ukraine with “unprecedented support” but have “no plans” to deploy their troops on Ukrainian territory.
