bmw I decided increase noticeably investment in its plant in Debrecenin Hungary, bringing them to 2 billion euros. The construction of this new plant started 6 months ago and the car production is expected to start by the end of 2025.
The increase in investment comes as the German brand has also decided to build a battery assembly plant, which will also create another 500 additional places. This solution will allow the automaker to simplify logistics and minimize the delivery time of batteries that will be used to build electric vehicles at the Hungarian plant.
This plant will be very important to BMW’s plans for electrification. Here, in fact, electric vehicles equipped with new platform “New class” (Neue Klasse in German). The platform is designed specifically for electric vehicles and will be used for all future next-generation battery models from the automaker. Milan NedeljkovicA BMW board member commented:
In Debrecen we are building the most modern plant in the world. With our iFACTORY, we are setting new industry standards for automotive manufacturing. Our investments underline our systematic approach to the implementation of electric mobility.
The batteries that BMW will produce at the Hungarian plant will be sixth-generation batteries. They will be characterized by the presence of cells of a cylindrical format with a diameter of 46 mm and two different heights. In addition, they will have a higher percentage of silicon and nickel and less cobalt. According to the above, the new batteries will be able to count on a 20% increase in energy density. According to BMW, in high-end models, this will lead to an increase in range by about 30%.
With a new platform that supports 800V architecture, these batteries can be charged at very high capacities on HPC speakers. Battery production is expected to start by the end of 2025.
Curiously, Hungary is becoming more and more important for electromobility. Also in the Debrecen area, CATL will build a large battery cell factory that will supply its main customers, including Mercedes.
