In China, in the province of Sichuan in southwest China, the construction of the world’s largest solar radio telescope has been completed. Space was designed to study the Sun, its behavior and how this activity affects our planet.

The Daocheng Solar Radio Telescope (DSRT) consists of 313 satellite dishes with a diameter of 6 meters, all arranged in a circle with a diameter of 3.14 km. The construction of this solar radio telescope cost China $14 million and will be operational in June 2023.

The telescope’s main task is to study explosions on the Sun and how they affect Earth and near-Earth space. DSRT will monitor solar flares and coronal mass ejections (giant plasma streams) that cause geomagnetic storms and can disable orbiting satellites, as well as adversely affect communications and power systems on Earth.

Solar flares and accompanying plasma eruptions occur due to the rearrangement of magnetic field lines in sunspots. Such explosions could affect the operation of the ISS, as well as the Chinese Tiangong orbital station. Such high-energy events are also dangerous for astronauts. On the other hand, solar flares and coronal mass ejections are the cause of auroras.

According to Chinese scientists, using this solar radio telescope, it will be possible to predict the space weather in near-Earth space, as well as to predict the appearance of powerful geomagnetic storms on Earth.

DSRT is one of a series of new projects for solar observations being implemented worldwide.

“We’re entering the golden age of solar astronomy as we have big new solar telescopes that will allow us to learn more about the behavior of our star. Meanwhile, in the same province of Sichuan, located on the territory of the Tibetan Plateau, China began the construction of a new huge optical telescope, which will become operational in 2026.
