Marketing move. Scientists discover vaping doesn’t help quit smoking

Studies show that smokers are more likely to quit vaping than regular cigarettes.

There is an alleged opinion that electronic cigarettes can help smokers get rid of a bad habit. However, a new study suggests it’s more of a marketing gimmick than reality, the Daily Mail writes.

A group of researchers from George Washington University used a panel of nearly 50,000 Americans contacted each year to discuss tobacco use in their study. As a result, the scientists selected a group of 545 people who used both cigarettes and e-cigarettes at the same time.

The scientists then followed each of the recipients for the next four years. Surveys have shown that smokers do not quit this habit with electronic cigarettes, but are also more likely to quit using e-cigarettes than regular cigarettes.

The study showed that the number of people who continued to smoke during the first year dropped significantly. In the second year, the number of still smokers was just over 59% – 322 people. As of the third year, the number of smokers decreased by 31% compared to the previous year and became 222. The minimum was reached in the fourth year – 191 people still continued to smoke, but the results were back in the fifth year – 217 people from the original sample continued to smoke.

The study also showed:

  • 86.9% of buyers continued to smoke and vape after the first year;
  • 80.7% continued to “double smoker” after the second year;
  • 76.7% continued to “double cigarettes” after the third year;
  • 67.9% continued to use cigarettes and electronic cigarettes after the fourth year.

Researchers have also found, over the years, that people who eventually quit vaping (59%) are almost twice as likely to quit smoking (32.1%). Thus, the researchers proved that the vape industry’s claim that its devices help quit smoking is actually untrue.
