Apple may let the Play Store come to iPhone soon

Apple is gearing up to allow competing app stores like the Play Store to come to iPhone and iPad soon.. The move represents a 180-degree turn in a company policy that has kept its competitors out of iOS for years.

The news, published by journalist and analyst Mark Gurman, notes that Apple’s idea is to have this integration happen by mid-2024.. However, this will only happen in Europe as it remains to be seen if the company will allow the same practice in other markets.

Gurman explains that the reason Apple’s change of position is due to compliance with European law, in this case the Digital Markets Act, which states that the company must allow free competition.including the addition of third-party app stores.

In practice, this means that iPhone or iPad users will be able to install apps without accessing the App Store, as has been the case until now. This would put an end to the strict restrictions that Apple put in place, blocking access to any developer who wasn’t part of the App Store.

A corollary that also follows from this measure is that Apple will no longer receive a 30% commission on all purchases made through apps installed from third-party app stores..

Among the reasons Apple has cited for preventing third-party apps from accessing the iPhone is the company’s concern that doing so could compromise the security of its hardware. This is because Apple will have no control over potential security holes that may exist in these applications.

Universal charger

This is not the only change that Apple will have to adapt to. You’ll soon have to implement the new European charging standard on all your iPhones, which involves moving from Lightning ports to USB-C ports..

This change is expected to take place from 2024. and that will force Apple to modify next generations of phones, otherwise they risk multi-million dollar fines or have their products banned in Europe. Both scenarios would be disastrous for the company, as much of its revenue comes from the European market.
