The Armenian Constitutional Court recognized the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court. The Kremlin is unhappy that an arrest warrant has been issued for Vladimir Putin in The Hague.

On March 24, the Constitutional Court of Armenia ruled that the country’s Constitution complies with the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court. This was reported by the Armenian TV channel News.Am.

Armenia’s commitment to recognize the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court is reportedly in line with its Constitution.

The decision is final and enters into force from the moment of its publication.

Journalists also stated that at the end of 2022, the Armenian government applied to the Constitutional Court on this issue. Yerevan wants to hold Azerbaijan accountable for “war crimes”.

It should be noted that Moscow has already reacted to the decision of the Armenian Constitutional Court. Therefore, TASS, citing its sources, reported that the Kremlin found Yerevan’s plans to join the ICC’s Rome Statute “unacceptable”. In particular, because of the arrest warrant of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

According to Russian media, Armenia was warned of the “extremely negative consequences” of relations with Russia.

Arrest warrant for Putin

Recall that on March 17, the International Criminal Court in The Hague issued an arrest warrant for Putin. In addition to the Russian dictator, a court in The Hague has also issued an arrest warrant for the presidential child rights commissioner, Maria Lvova-Belova.

Then the representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation stated that the country did not sign the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court and did not have to comply with its decisions.

Also, the Prosecutor General of Ukraine explained what it means to issue an order for Putin’s arrest. According to Andriy Kostin, the decision of the International Criminal Court in The Hague is historic for Ukraine and the entire international legal system. He also added that law enforcement had recorded the deportation of 16,000 children from Ukraine to the Russian Federation.

On March 20, the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation filed a lawsuit against the ISS prosecutor and judges in The Hague. Russia’s Investigative Committee noted that the country’s leaders had immunity before the International Court of Justice and that the ISS’s decision was declared illegal.
