QuantumScape ships first solid-state prototypes to automakers December 21, 2022 22

Solid state batteries are the technology that should allow electric vehicles take an important step forward in terms of autonomy and recharge time. There have been many announcements about this technology from companies that are working on it, and the goal, at least on paper, is to make it available within the next few years.

Now the exciting news is coming from QuantumScape, one of the hottest realities in solid-state battery development. The company really knew send the first cell prototypes with its 24-layer solid state technology to its automotive partners for testing.

Thus, automakers will be able to start testing these new batteries and any feedback QuantumScape will receive will improve its technology development for future cell production. However, the company recognizes that there is still a lot of work to be done bring this technology to market. Therefore, the testing of its partners will be very important for the improvement of solid-state batteries.

The company then added that the cells brought in for testing are referred to as “A0 samples“, introduce own format about which he will provide more information over the next year.

The company will also produce “B samples” and “C samples” of its cells before moving into full-scale series production, and its partners are expected to continue to participate in testing. If the roadmap does not change, “Pattern B” cells are expected to begin testing in 2023, and “Pattern C” cells in 18 months.

WORK FOR LONGER

Certainly, the cell tests to be carried out by the company’s partners are a sign that the development of new technology is moving forward. However, it seems clear that the first cars equipped with solid-state elements will have to wait a long time. A few months ago, QuantumScape provided an update on the work they are doing and the challenges they need to address in cell development.

All interesting information. However, if we do manage to complete the development of the new technology within a couple of years, initially solid-state batteries will still only be available for a few models. Mass adoption will likely take some time, perhaps with the advent of the second generation of this technology. It is for this reason that some battery manufacturers, such as StoreDot and CATL, have moderated their enthusiasm for this technology, saying that it will take many more years to begin mass production of these batteries.

In any case, 2023 should bring several innovations in terms of the development of this technology. Therefore, it remains only to wait for new information from the companies that work there.
