Nissan, Component Sharing to Reduce Cost of Electrified Powertrains March 09, 2023 0

As part of his plan Nissan Embishment 2030The automaker plans to launch 27 new electrified models, including 19 electric vehicles, by 2030. To continue this ambitious program, Nissan decided to take a new approach to the development of its electrified powertrains in order to cut costs. The new approach that the builder called “X-in-1According to reports, the main components of the EV and e-POWER powertrains will be common and designed in a modular manner, which will reduce development and production costs by 30% compared to 2019. All by 2026.

In practice, the core components will be standardized for use in different contexts. Nissan then added that by around 2026, thanks to this work, it expects to offer e-POWER models at the same price as endotherms.

COST REDUCTION

Nissan emphasizes that by taking this approach, it aims to make its electrified models more competitive in the future by reducing costs. This powertrain strategy for electric and e-POWER models will, in addition to reducing costs, lead to the development of lighter, more compact and more efficient powertrains.

In addition, this new design philosophy will allow Nissan to produce the main common components of the electrified powertrain on a single production line. The Japanese brand has already developed a prototype 3-in-1 all-electric propulsion system with a motor, inverter and gearbox. On the other hand, a 5 in 1 system was created for e-POWER vehicles, consisting of motor modules, inverter, gearbox, multiplier and power generator.

The automaker also added that it will introduce a new electric motor that reduces the use of rare earth elements to 1% of the weight of the magnet, with major implications for the sustainability of its supply chain. Toshihiro HiraiSenior Vice President Responsible for Electrified Powertrain Development commented:

We make the most of our experience and know-how in the development and production of electrified technologies. Through our innovation in the development of electrified powertrains, we will continue to create new value for customers.
