Endothermic shutdowns in 2035, ACEA: EU must find a solution 09 March 2023 5

Debate continues to delay the EU Council vote to stop endothermy in 2035. As you know, the vote was delayed due to the position expressed by some countries, including Italy, which intends to slow down the transition process, also asking for more attention to technology neutrality. Also affected by the uncertainty of Germany, which has demanded a retreat from e-fuel so that cars running on this fuel can be sold even after 2035.

And Germany will tip the scales on the outcome of the vote and wait for some kind of agreement to be found, an impasse has arisen this worries the automotive industry, which requires certain rules, given the very large investments required for the deep transformation that this sector will have to carry out in the coming years.

For this, ASEAAssociation of European Automobile Manufacturers, calls for this solution found in the shortest possible time to the current stalemate to stop endothermia in 2035.

WE NEED TECHNOLOGICAL NEUTRALITY

The Association emphasizes that national and European climate targets should not be questioned. However, in order to achieve themtechnological openness remains important“.

Europe must remain flexible to respond to diverse needs and adapt to changing circumstances.

For this reason, ACEA invites the leaders of the European Union to address the issue of vehicle emissions on the roads today as well. Thus, the association aims to the concept of technological neutrality. Thus, not only electricity at any cost, but also the use of all those technologies that in any case can achieve the goals of the decarbonization of the transport sector. In this regard, the President of ACEA, Luca de Meocommented:

Mass electrification is an important part of the solution we are all striving for, but it is not a miracle solution. The enemy is fossil fuel based energy, not any particular technology. We noted that Europe is the only geographic region that intends to move away from technological neutrality as the basis of its regulatory framework.

The association adds that the European Union automotive industry is fully committed to combating climate change as soon as possible, working with all partners and doing everything possible to invest in electrification, build the value chain, save jobs and help the EU remain competitive.

However, you need the right conditions such as access to the necessary raw materials and a widespread network of car filling stations.

ACEA is also calling on policy makers to create the necessary framework conditions for a strong and rapid entry into the zero emission car and van market. These include access to the necessary raw materials and a dense network of charging and refueling infrastructure for these vehicles. As part of the CO2 regulatory review due in 2026, there should be clear indicators to track progress in these areas.
