Opel implements its electrification plan, which will make it only electric brand in Europe in 2028. As part of this strategy, they will 130 million euros invested in the Eisenach plantin Germany, go and produceelectric heir to the Opel Granland. The start of production of the new electric model is scheduled for second half of 2024.
The automaker declined to provide specific details about this model, which will be very important to its electrification plan. However, he made it clear that the electric successor to the Opel Grandland would be his first model with STLA Medium platform Stellantis group of companies.
This is a very interesting detail. As you know, this platform allows you to integrate one or two electric motors. More importantly, Stellantis emphasized that its models developed on this platform will be able to have range up to 700 km.
The current Opel Grandland, we recall, is offered with internal combustion engines, as well as in Plug-in versions. Therefore, the future of this model is electric, even if it cannot be ruled out that the brand may decide to continue offering endothermic (also electrified) versions for some time to come.
Considering this new electric SUV is coming in 2024, it’s possible that more information will emerge in the next few months. The plant in Eisenach, which will be adapted for the production of the new model, is located in Thuringia in central Germany. In 2022, the company celebrated its 30th anniversary with an event celebrating the production of 3.7 million vehicles.
Investment of 130 million euros is intended to achieve the goals Plan Dare Forward 2030 of the Stellantis group, which expects, among other things, to cover 100% of sales of cars with electric vehicles in Europe and 50% with cars and light commercial vehicles in the USA by the end of the decade. Florian HuttleOpel CEO commented:
We have been producing high-quality vehicles here in Thuringia for 31 years and are constantly improving our competitiveness. We will continue this well-trodden path with the electric successor Opel Grandland. This decision is another major step that Opel is taking towards its goal of becoming an all-electric brand in Europe by 2028.
