L3Harris Technologies has received a contract to manufacture, upgrade and repair hardware and software for the AN/ALQ-211 airborne electronic warfare system, Military Aerospace Electronics reported. This complex is designed to protect the aircraft from missile attacks directed by radar, infrared or laser channels.
The contract has been signed with the US Air Force and will cost $584 million over five years. AN / ALQ-211 is part of the family of airborne electronic warfare systems and includes the AIDEWS (Advanced Integrated Defense Electronic Warfare Package) complex installed on helicopters and convertiplanes of the US special forces.
The AIDEWS complex detects, blocks and allows you to avoid deadly threats and provides situational awareness of enemy electronic warfare, infrared and laser weapon sensors. When an aircrew encounters a threatening RF signal, the AN/ALQ-211 determines how far it is from the aircraft. If the aircraft is within range of a radar, infrared or laser missile, the AN/ALQ-211 can break the target lock with RF and optoelectronic countermeasures, suggesting that it is time for the pilot to release the thermal traps.
The system is already integrated into the CV-22 Osprey special-purpose tiltrotor. It is also installed on Norway’s multi-purpose NH 90 helicopter and F-16 warplanes of Chile, Poland, Pakistan, Turkey and Oman.
