The company will ensure 100% recycling of rare earth materials in its products within two years.
According to an official press release, Apple has announced plans to use 100% recycled cobalt in all batteries and 100% recycled tin soldering and gold plating for all circuit boards by 2025. In addition, the company plans to make all magnets in Apple devices from secondary rare earth elements by the same date.
Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of environment, policy and social initiatives, said the plan is in line with Apple’s goal of producing zero-carbon products by 2030.
“Apple innovates every day to create technologies that improve people’s lives and protect the planet,” said CEO Tim Cook. “Our commitment to the environment is integral to everything we do and who we are,” the Apple CEO added.
Apple claims they’ve almost made progress in removing plastic from packaging and now only contain 4% plastic.
In addition, the company is already using a number of robots to help extract and recycle recycled materials from old appliances. For example, since 2019 an iPhone shredding robot called Daisy has helped the company extract nearly 11,000 kilograms of cobalt from batteries.
And last year, Apple introduced a recycling robot called Taz that helps recover rare earth elements like magnets from a variety of products.
