Matthew Hepworth, 48, nurse and member of the Lune Valley Metal Detector Club, has stumbled upon many valuable historical artifacts over the years, but this latest find surpasses them all.
Matthew Hepworth’s discovery of a rare gold ring engraved with the image of the infant Jesus in a field in Lancaster made waves in the treasure hunting community. The 48-year-old nurse has been using metal detectors for over 30 years, and her latest finding has been described as a “once in a lifetime” event.

The oval ring dates from the 1400s and is decorated with an image of the Virgin Mary. A review will determine if it’s a treasure, but Hepworth hopes it ends up in a local museum that everyone will admire.
Hepworth said: “I was very excited about it. I was very surprised to find it. It’s a dream come true. It’s first class and a very rare find in the UK.”
Head Nurse has been a long-time member of the Lune Valley Detection Club and has a passion for finding pieces of history underground. In 2016 he discovered a Bronze Age tomb and a silver seal depicting a slave. But this latest find outlasted them all.
Hepworth said, “It’s a great honor to bring a piece of history off the face of the earth. This ring is not only a beautiful piece of art, it’s also a story about the past.”
The site’s owner was “stunned” by the finding, following a weak metal detector signal. Mr Hepworth immediately reported the find to the Artifact Officer and the Lancaster City Museum after the find was found earlier this month.
The gold ring is believed to be over 500 years old, making it a truly rare find. Hepworth’s discovery caused a stir in the metal detector community, and many applaud his dedication to preserving history through his passion.
“This is the discovery that makes it all worthwhile. I hope this ring finds a home in a museum where everyone can enjoy it,” Hepworth said.
