“The sky is closed”: a volunteer told what prevented the Ukrainians from recruiting a powerful drone army

Domestic drone developers are required to test the aircraft and train the pilots, but they are often forbidden to fly despite the permits obtained.

In the rear areas of Ukraine, the military very strictly restricts drone flights, which prevents engineers from developing drones for the front. Pavlo Kashchuk, a Ukrainian volunteer and founder of the InfoCar portal, wrote this on Facebook.

Unmanned aerial vehicles pose a threat to manned military aviation, so the airspace is closed to the passage of large aircraft in certain areas and unmanned aerial vehicles have to land on the ground. Also, Ukrainians need to pre-register and get permission to launch the UAV.

“So it was designed and it looked like it was supposed to work perfectly. What is it really? In reality, I think, a kind of irresponsible disregard of the interests of UAV operators. That’s when a “closing of the sky” occurs. with field margins”.

He explained that the developers of Ukrainian reconnaissance and attack aircraft should regularly test their devices to fix the shortcomings, as well as check the performance of UAVs that are already serial before they are transferred to the front. Drones are also opening schools to train military pilots in the back.

“This is a purely military area and one of the most important areas today. And this area is actually partially paralyzed,” wrote Pavel Kashchuk.

According to the volunteer, the teams get permission to launch the UAV on a certain day and at a certain place. They usually gather, go to a fairly remote place, hand over and install all the necessary equipment, and then receive a notification about the “closing of the sky” for an indefinite period. The flight ban sometimes lasts an hour, sometimes a whole day, and the next situation repeats.

“How this affects the operation of an extremely necessary and important area is inexplicable – a stupid chaos. Well, an open question for those in charge – is it really necessary to close the area, for example, with a radius of 100 km? At an airport in case of take-off or landing, in a helicopter flight and Isn’t it on separate destinations and routes? Does it really take 5-6 hours?” asked Pavel Kashchuk.

He suggested dividing heights and not lowering vehicles that do not rise above 50 metres. In addition, according to the volunteer, it is worth doing at least a minimum of forecasting and flight planning, as well as the interaction between structures.

In April, they wrote that Ukrainian developers are testing a new Boomerang drone for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Flights were necessary for the aircraft to enter service in the Ukrainian army.
