“We want drones like in Ukraine”: Special operations forces ask Pentagon to develop UAV

The US Army believes that every MTR unit should have kamikaze drones.

According to Defense One, the US Army wants to develop kamikaze drones similar to those commonly used in Ukraine. This emerged from a tender request issued by the Army Applications Laboratory. They point out that such drones are useful for infantry and suggest that UAV bombers may one day become a common tool in the armament of medium infantry platoons.

Army Special Operations Command currently uses a variety of small drones such as the Flip Knife. However, the rest of the army at the small unit level has only one Skydio X2D drone for reconnaissance.

The development of small kamikaze drones is “vital to the military’s future combat operations.” The request to the Pentagon states that the UAVs must be from the Department of Defense’s verified list of suppliers. This list includes a mix of quadcopters and winged drones, such as the Chinese DJI Mavic 3.

The request also says that soldiers should be able to fire ammunition from a drone and monitor the operation in real time (FPV). The US MTR says they want drones that can release something more powerful to the enemy than the usual M67 fragmentation grenade the Skydio X2D is currently being converted to. Ideally, army special forces would like to have a drone with anti-tank ammunition.

“Even if it is hypothetically possible to save the lives of soldiers and destroy enemy equipment quickly and without risk, you must do everything possible to realize this possibility with the help of drones of that force,” says the US MTR.
