A growing number of automakers have chosen to adopt the Tesla charging standard in North America. Mercedesin fact, made it clear that he would present NACS connector on their electric vehicles. So, after Ford, General Motors, Polestar, Rivian and Volvo, now it’s up to the German car manufacturer.
The content of the announcement is very similar to what has already been announced by other brands that have chosen to use the NACS connector. So, as of 2024 all electric Mercedes will be able to access more than 12 thousand superchargers present in North America. Obviously to reload they will have to use special adapter.
Since 2025however, new models will originally equipped with a NACS connector and therefore they will no longer need to use an adapter to recharge on chargers. Mercedes has not said anything about how they will be able to charge vehicles with a Tesla plug from CCS charging stations. Likely, as other automakers have already announced, a special adapter will be offered.
In addition to giving its electric vehicles access to the Tesla Supercharger network, the automaker is working to build its own charging network in North America. As the German brand already stated at the beginning of the year, the goal is to have more than 400 hubs across North America by 2027, with more than 2,500 fast charging points available for electric vehicle users.
The first Mercedes charging stations in North America will open by the end of 2023 and will be equipped with CCS1 and NACS outlets. The German manufacturer plans to build more than 2,000 charging stations in North America, Europe, China and other key markets by the end of the decade, bringing the total number of charging points to more than 10,000. Ola CalleniusCEO of Mercedes, commented:
Our strategic priority is clear: to produce the most desirable cars in the world. To accelerate the transition to electric vehicles, we are committed to improving the full electric vehicle experience for our customers, including providing fast, convenient and reliable charging solutions. That is why we are aiming to build our global network of powerful charging stations and the first facilities will open this year. In parallel, we are introducing the NACS connector to our vehicles, providing drivers with access to an extensive quality charging network across North America.
