Skoda aims for CO2 neutrality July 22, 2023 1

Skoda keep driving it way to achieve CO2 neutrality. In this regard, the automaker announced that SKO-ENERGO branch which is responsible for supplying electricity to Skoda factories and the city of Mlada Boleslav, will switch to 100% natural power.

In particular, he initiated a key project to modernize his plant in order to use only biomass. The work will start in 2024 and with the transition to the use of wood chips and phyto-pellets, energy production will become completely neutral in terms of emissions.

With estimated cost 141 million eurosThe modernized plant will be one of the largest projects of its kind in the Czech Republic and will be operational within three years. This will contribute to the achievement of Skoda’s ambitious environmental targets across the entire value chain, enshrined in Skoda’s “Next Level 2030” strategy.

PROJECT

complete replacement of the power plant will be carried out over three years. All boilers will use exclusively biomass, consisting of 70% wood chips and 30% phyto-pellets. The biomass will be certified in accordance with European and Czech legislation, highlighting the sustainability of the entire supply chain. Once the transition is completed, annual CO2 savings will be estimated at 290,000 tons per year.

The plant currently uses a combination of coal and biomass; SKO-ENERGO started using biomass in 2005. Since then, the share of green fuel has been steadily increasing. By 2022, renewable energy sources will account for about 35 percent of all energy used in Skoda Auto plants in Bohemia.

Michael OeljeclausMember of the Management Board of Skoda Auto for Production and Logistics, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of SKO-ENERGO, commented:

At Skoda Auto and SKO-ENERGO, we do our homework when it comes to achieving our ambitious sustainability goals. The proposed transformation of the power plant by SKO-ENERGO represents the most radical modernization of the company’s power supply in the last 25 years. At the same time, the planned scale of the project is also one of the largest in the Czech Republic, with an estimated cost of 141 million euros. More than half of this amount will be covered by grants from the State Fund for Environmental Modernization of the Czech Republic, which clearly demonstrates what we can achieve through close and trusting cooperation with stakeholders.
