Boaters sailing near the humpback whale’s carcass captured an unusual scene: The whale literally exploded, releasing blood along with rotting internal organs. The video was published on Instagram.
In a case worthy of a National Geographic story, a group of marine animal watchers filmed themselves seeing a large animal resembling a lifeless humpback whale in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of California.
As it got closer, the abdomen and other internal organs such as the spleen, small intestine, and stomach all rose noisily to the surface from within the dead animal.
After that, the carcass slowly began to sink to the ocean floor.
The chilling video took the internet by storm after it was shared by popular animal-focused Instagram account Nature Is Metal.
“These powerful explosions are unique to whales because most decaying animals do not retain all of the accumulated gas in their bodies,” the publication notes.
When an animal dies, bacteria in the carcass decompose and produce methane. If gas is not removed from the body, it gradually accumulates and then comes out.
It is also stated that the accumulated gas will eventually find the path of least resistance to escape. The only way to prevent this is to pierce the whale’s skin before it explodes on its own.
