Italian car market, February 2024 still in positive territory: +12.8% March 01, 2024 12

Positive month February 2024 for the Italian car market. According to data provided by UNRAE, in the month just ended there were 147,094 registrationscompared to 130,405 a year ago (+12.8%). However, in the first two months of the year, a total of 289,103 vehicles were registered, representing an increase of 11.7% compared to the same period in 2023. The numbers are still far from the pre-pandemic period (-15.9% in the January-February 2019 period).

UNRAE reiterates the importance of the new incentive structure being introduced as soon as possible. The anticipation of the new Ecobonus has effectively paralyzed sales of zero or very low emission vehicles.

We are awaiting the publication of a Prime Ministerial Order that will bring into effect the new 2024 incentives that have been announced for months and are paralyzing sales of zero or very low emission vehicles. As has been reiterated many times, we hope that incentives will come into full effect as soon as possible to avoid further continuation of this negative expectation effect.

The fact that the expectation of new incentives is affecting sales of electric models can also be judged from data for February 2024. Despite the increase compared to January, in February the share of BEVs stalled at 3.4% and the share of PHEVs at 3.2% of the total market.

Let’s move on to Power suppliesGasoline models gain 30% of volumes and reach a share of 31.31%. Diesel’s share, down by double digits, fell 4.4 points in February to 14.8% of the total. However, for liquefied petroleum gas this share is 9.5%, and for methane it is only 0.2%. Hybrid vehicles continue to grow and hold a market share of 37.8%, with 10% coming from “full” hybrids and 27.8% from “mild” hybrids. Finally, in February, the BEV share stalled at 3.4% and the PHEV share at 3.2%.
