The US did not like that Huawei continued to produce advanced chips despite sanctions. The company was suspected of organizing a secret supply chain.
The US has announced sanctions against companies involved in the secret chip supply network for Huawei. SCMP reported that chip manufacturers Qingdao Si’En, SwaySure and Shenzhen Pensun Technology, as well as memory manufacturer ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), are at risk of being blacklisted.
The White House will increase pressure on Huawei, which introduced its cutting-edge processor for 5G smartphones last year. Sources said that in addition to chip-producing companies, US authorities may also impose sanctions on Shenzhen Pengjin High-Tech Co. and SiCarrier. These chip manufacturing equipment firms help Huawei access Western equipment.
The US government is also pressuring allies such as the Netherlands, Germany, South Korea and Japan to further tighten restrictions on China’s access to semiconductor technology. Huawei is one of the companies at the center of both the sanctions war and Beijing’s efforts to reduce dependence on Western technology.
It is unclear whether the US Commerce Department has evidence linking these companies to Huawei, the sources said. The United States has the right to impose sanctions on businesses that pose a risk of harming its national security in the future.
Important
It is not yet known when US officials will make the final decision on imposing sanctions on Huawei’s partner companies. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is expected to visit China in 2024, and after this visit it will be possible to analyze Washington’s next steps. Authorities are also considering increasing tariffs on older generation Chinese chips.
We previously reported that Chinese military secrets were “leaked” via WeChat messenger. The PLA Strategic Support Forces assessed that the contracting agency did not take security measures and suspended all procurement through this contractor.
