The network showed the Romanian castle that became Nevermore Academy in the TV series “Wednesday”.

The Netflix hit was filmed in the Romanian castle of Cantacuzino, with only a few CGI enhancements.

Netflix’s new hit “Wednesday” was filmed in Europe. And mainly in Romania, where an elegant castle built at the beginning of the 20th century plays the role of Nevermore Academy, where the main character Wednesday Addams works. The Daily Mail writes about it.

The supernatural series begins Wednesday with her expulsion from another school, so her parents, played by Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán, decide to send her to Nevermore Academy, old school where children with supernatural abilities or those with supernatural abilities may feel left out. comfortable.

A suitable place was needed for such a magical and gloomy place and it was found in Romania.

The role of the academy was played by the castle of Cantacuzino, located in the Romanian city of Busteni.

The Byzantine, Ottoman and late Renaissance castle was built in 1911 by order of Prince Gheorghe Grigore Cantacuzino, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Romania and a wealthy landowner. The prince was so wealthy that his contemporaries called him “nabob”. But the prince did not have time to fully enjoy the wonderful castle, which was supposed to be a hunting lodge. He died two years after the completion of construction.

In 1948, the castle was expropriated and a sanatorium was placed in it for employees of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the People’s Republic of Romania.

But before that, the castle was plundered: all furniture, all works of art, lamps and anything of any value at least were taken from it.

After 1989, the castle was returned to the descendants of the Cantacuzino family, grandson of prince Ioana, who sold it to private individuals in 2004. The castle, which was opened to visitors after the restoration works, is one of the attractions of Romania today.

In 2008, German lawyer and property developer Kurt Neuschitzer purchased the property, hoping to turn it into a golf and ski resort. But it still awaits government approval to work. It has spent three million dollars on restoration so far, opening an art gallery and a restaurant with a hotel inside.

Series creator Tim Burton was so fascinated by the castle that he decided to shoot “Wednesday” here before filming even started. The fortress was somewhat supplemented by computer graphics, but remained generally recognizable.

“It was great coming here to Romania because everything strangely fits into the Addams Family universe. Trying to make Romania look like Vermont was an interesting challenge, but we managed to find a lot of new places,” said Tim Burton.

And Jenna Ortega admitted that she really loves Romania and is very pleased with the castle.

In addition, the series was filmed in seventy other locations, and the town of Jericho was built from the ground up.

Earlier, the creators of the series talked about how they created a room with a round window where Wednesday and the werewolf girl Enid lived.
