Neither Meryl nor Don would comment on what prompted this decision, keeping their personal lives out of the press. Despite the separation, the couple said that although they choose to live separately, they will continue to take care of each other and maintain a warm relationship. Moreover, Streep recently appeared at the Princesa de Asturias Awards 2023 with an engagement ring.

Streep and Gummer’s love story

Meryl and Don met through the actress’ brother in 1978. This happened after Meryl’s boyfriend and colleague John Casale died of lung cancer in March 1978. Streep decided to move out of the apartment where she lived with the deceased, and her brother and his friend, who turned out to be Gummer, helped her find a new home. Meryl and Don became close and she transferred her New York apartment to him. The couple began corresponding with each other and soon the friendship became more serious.

Already in September of the same year, Meryl married Don. The wedding took place in the garden of his parents’ house. They have four children: Henry (43 years old), Mamie (40 years old), Grace (37 years old) and Louise Jacobson (30 years old) and five grandchildren.

Streep was last seen in public with her husband at the Oscars in 2018.

Sharing the secrets of her successful marriage, the actress said it was all about “good intentions and the willingness to bend over backwards and be silent from time to time.”

“There is no action plan for starting a family: It’s always a big negotiation. But I need to work holistically and have a great bond of love in life. I can’t imagine how you can give up one for the other,” Streep emphasized.

Their children also followed in their parents’ creative footsteps. So Henry became a musical artist. Louise is known for her role in the HBO Max series The Gilded Age. Mamie has starred in projects such as Heartburn and Emily Owens, and MD Grace, Dr. Death, Mr. He starred in the films Robot and American Horror Story: Freak Show.

Meryl and Gummer have always been supportive of each other’s careers, and Don has accompanied his wife to various award ceremonies over the years, including the Oscars and BAFTAs. Streep has received several awards throughout her career, including eight Golden Globes and three Oscars.

After receiving the Best Actress award for the movie The Iron Lady in 2012, Meryl mentioned Don at the beginning of her speech:

“I want to thank Don. I want him to know that he gave me everything I value most in our lives.”
