Global analytics and consulting firm Gallup announced that opinions about immigration among Americans remain “mixed and highly partisan.”
According to a survey conducted from 5 to 26 July, 27% of Americans think immigration should increase31% believe that the current level should be maintained and 38% want to be reduced a figure that has not been seen since 2014, when 41% of respondents showed their attitude towards immigrants in their country.
According to the signature respondents’ attitudes reveal a narrow division of points of view observed in recent years, marking the return of more Americans who want immigration to decrease rather than increase.
In 2020, 34% of Americans have made it clear they want to stop immigration. the next year it fell one percentage point, 33%, until it reached 38% today, five percentage points higher than the last measurement.
While Americans have made their position on immigration clear, Gallup’s question to its respondents does not specify whether it refers to legal or illegal immigration. therefore, the interpretation is left to the respondents.
Despite the fact that in the immigration survey 38% “cause noise”, 58% who still want the number of people arriving or staying in the country to continue to increase or stay the same believe that immigration is good for the country, and 24% believe that immigration is bad for the country.
While Americans applaud immigration for its economic and cultural viability, the border crisis sparked debate among Democrats, those who are in favor of increasing immigration and Republicans who are seeking to reduce it, which is perhaps controversial among Americans.
