Did you know that the most famous spy in the world, James Bond, was created by a journalist?

A series of novels by a British writer and journalist. Ian Fleming about the dashing 007, based in part on the real life experiences of its handsome author, spawned one of the most profitable movie franchises in history.

Ian Lancaster Fleming was born into a wealthy family in London on May 29, 1908. As an adult, he worked as a foreign correspondent, stockbroker and personal assistant to the Director of Naval Intelligence of Great Britain during the Second World War. An experience that would give a lot of “fabric” to his Bond novels.

Bond’s first book, Casino Royale, was published in 1953. Fleming has written 12 novels and two collections of short stories about 007.which together have sold over 18 million copies.

According to New York Times: “Bond himself,” said Fleming, “was “composition of all the secret agents and commandos that I met during the war”, but his tastes—blonds, stir-not-stir martinis, expensive tailored suits, scrambled eggs, short-sleeve shirts, and Rolex watches—were Fleming’s, but not all comparisons were the kind the author liked to encourage. Bond, he said, had “more guts than me” and was also “more handsome”.

The first Bond film, Dr. No, was released in 1962; Scottish actor Sean Connery starred in the title role.

Connery played Bond in only six films; From Russia with Love (1963) and Goldfinger (1964) were the only films made during Fleming’s lifetime. Since then, five other actors (George Lazenby, Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig) have played the super spy in about two dozen EON Productions films.

Fleming, who wrote most of his writing at his Jamaican home, Goldeneye, also wrote the children’s book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and several non-fiction works.

On August 12, 1964, British writer and journalist Ian Fleming, creator of the world’s most famous fictional spy, James Bond, died of a heart attack at the age of 56 in Kent, England.

After Fleming’s death, a number of other authors were commissioned to write Bond novels.
