“What is happening is pure nuclear terrorism” that Russia is practicing, and “it could end unpredictably at any moment,” said Dmitry Orlov, mayor of the city of Energodar.
The Zaporozhye plant has been occupied by Russian troops since March (a few weeks after the invasion of Ukraine began), and Kyiv accuses Moscow of stationing hundreds of soldiers and storing weapons there.
He also claims that Russia is bombing areas of the plant to blame Ukrainian troops for the shooting.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday accused Russia of nuclear “blackmail” against his country and against the entire “free world”.
Energoatom recommends abandoning Energodar
Zelensky assured that Russian forces were “hiding” at the plant to bomb the cities of Nikopol and Marganets, which are under Ukrainian control.
The Ukrainian nuclear agency Energoatom recommended that residents of Energodar leave their homes as soon as possible.
“According to residents, new shelling is taking place in the direction of the nuclear plant,” the nuclear plant operator said on Saturday.
But pro-Russian authorities in the occupied districts of Zaporozhye blame Ukrainian forces for the attacks.
“Fill with energy and Zaporozhye NPP they are once again being attacked by Zelensky policemen,” said Vladimir Rogov, a member of the administration set up by Moscow in the region.
The rockets fell “into areas located on the banks of the Dnieper and in the territory of the plant,” he said, without giving any information about casualties or damage. This river separates the territories controlled by Russia and Ukraine.
