On this day, One World Trade Center officially opened its doors.

The new tower along with the rest of the complex world trade centerreplaced the twin towers and the surrounding complex, which were destroyed in the September 11, 2001 attacks.

While the city and the country were shaken by the attacks that marked the beginning of a series of US-led military operations dubbed “War on terror’, it was decided to replace the twin towers with new office buildings, parks, a museum and a memorial to the dead.

In 2002, following the completion of cleanup and reclamation work, the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation announced Competition find the chief architect of the new structure.

Daniel Libeskinda Polish-American architect who was running a studio in Berlin at the time won and became the site’s master planner.

In reality, however, various individuals and entities, including then-Governor George Pataki, tenant Larry Silverstein, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, fought over what would happen to the space commonly known as “Zero Zone”

The original plans for the site were immersed in patriotic feeling after September 11th.

Libeskind developed asymmetrical tower reminiscent of the Statue of Liberty and was at the same height as the original World Trade Center, topped by a 1,776-foot spire.

Pataki called it “The Statue of Liberty”a name that had become commonplace but had largely fallen out of use by the time One World Trade Center opened.

In 2004, David Childs, Silverstein’s favorite architect, officially took over, with Libeskind remaining as site planner.

Childs’ “ultimate” design, a more traditional, symmetrical tapering tower. in the shape of an octagon in the middle and then turns back into a rectangular prism, it was discovered in 2005.

The New York Police Department has requested additional modifications, in particular, a massive building without windows with a concrete base. The New York Times architecture critic Nikolai Urusov criticized the base as “a grotesque attempt to hide an undercurrent of paranoia”. Although its cornerstone was founded in 2004, the construction of One World Trade began only in the summer of 2006.

slow pace of construction (the tower was “completed” in August 2012 and the spire was not installed until May 2013) has often been a cause for concern for the building’s developers and the city. At the same time, he allowed the tower to become more than just a reminder of what was lost.

As architecture critic Kurt Andersen put it, “I think the fact that it took over ten years to complete (graduality) it’s an iconic feeling of rebirth be sharper and more irresistible.”

Prior to opening, media conglomerate Condé Nast announced that it would be moving its New York City headquarters from Times Square to One World Trade Center, occupying floors 20 to 44. Its location and the heritage of the original World Trade Center made the tower a natural choice for many financial institutions, but the building’s developers have made efforts to attract a diverse group of tenants, including media and technology companies.

Known for its 360-degree floor-to-ceiling views of Manhattan, Long Island, New Jersey and the New York Harbor, One World Trade is now one of the most notable features of the Manhattan skylinea tribute to the buildings that came before it, but in itself a 21st century New York phenomenon.
