Powerful earthquake hits Turkey near Istanbul

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.9 occurred on Wednesday morning near Istanbul. The tremor was recorded at 04:08 Moscow time.

The epicenter was located in Duzce County at a depth of 6.8 kilometers, TASS reports.

Tremors were felt in many areas of the center and northwest of Turkey.

Chandeliers staggered in the houses, plates and spoons, pieces of furniture fell. Information about the victims and destruction has not yet been received.

Earlier it was reported that powerful tremors with a magnitude of more than five points were felt in the Indonesian province of West Java.

The city of Chianjur with a population of more than 2 million people was hit the hardest. It all happened during the day – the residents suddenly felt the walls vibrate. The houses shook and soon began to collapse. Many were asleep at that moment and did not have time to run out. People tried to save their relatives, who were covered with rubble, panic began on the streets.

More than 200 people died, most of them children.
