Lithuania to pay 37m euros in compensation to Jews whose property was confiscated during the Holocaust

According to Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte, compensation is a “moral duty” of Lithuanians to those who have lost their lives and property. The money will begin to be paid in 2024 and will continue for the next six years.

Today, November 24, the Lithuanian Seimas voted in first reading a bill providing compensation to Jews for property confiscated during World War II. This was reported on the official website of the Parliament.

As noted, the Lithuanian Cabinet of Ministers offered to allocate 37 million euros as compensation for personal property expropriated during the Holocaust.

Now such compensations are allocated annually, but only for property confiscated from Jewish religious communities in the last century. In Lithuania, the relevant law on goodwill compensation was adopted in 2011.

Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte said, “Why is this issue important? It is important not only as a certain moral obligation to those who lost their lives and property during the Holocaust, but also as a certain international obligation of Lithuania.” Draft law for members of the Seimas.

According to him, the adoption of changes to the current legislation will “close the problem” with compensation for the expropriated property.

Compensation is expected to begin in 2024 and continue for the next six years until 2030.

Applications for compensation to the Lithuanian Goodwill Fund can be filed until the end of 2023. This can be done both by the affected persons themselves and by their heirs, subject to the provision of supporting documents.

While the bill was supported by 85 deputies in the first reading, nine deputies abstained, two of them against it.

During the Holocaust, about 90% of the approximately 208,000 Lithuanian Jews perished. The extermination of the Jews in Lithuania reached its greatest extent in the period from June to December 1941.
