According to Michael Carpenter, Permanent Representative of the United States to the OSCE, such a decision could harm not only Washington but also Ukraine.
The United States does not plan to include Russia in the list of countries that support terrorism. This was expressed during a briefing by Michael Carpenter, Permanent Representative of the United States to the OSCE.
According to him, the USA, unlike the European Union countries, does not intend to include Russia in the list of countries that support terrorism. The diplomat claims that such a decision by Washington could have negative consequences, including for Ukraine.
Listing Russia as a state sponsor of terrorism would limit the White House’s ability to provide humanitarian aid to Ukrainian citizens, as well as facilitate other actions that Carpenter says are in the interests of Kyiv and Washington. In this context, the US Ambassador to the OSCE referred to the grain agreement reached during the talks in Turkey.
Carpenter assured that the White House will continue to increase sanctions pressure on Russia, provide military assistance to Ukraine, and consider options for Moscow to tighten its export control regime. According to the American diplomat, such an approach would be the most effective way to support Kiev in a large-scale war.
It should be noted that a similar view regarding the recognition of Russia as a sponsor of terrorism was expressed by Julian Smith, the US Ambassador to NATO. According to him, Washington will not take such a “useless” step, but will continue to focus on sanctions policy and export restrictions against the Kremlin.
The European Parliament also recognized Russia as a sponsor of terrorism. The anti-Russian resolution was supported by 494 European politicians. The document, approved by the European Parliament, refers to war crimes committed on Ukrainian soil by soldiers of the Russian Armed Forces.
