“Inspired by a new generation of leaders, I have decided to pass the baton to the United States Senate. Today I announce that I will not seek re-election and will leave the United States Senate at the end of my term on January 3, 2025,” Stabenov said in a statement Thursday.

Stabenov, chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture, says that will focus on the adoption of the bill on farms in Congress, which allocates hundreds of billions of dollars to support agriculture.

“Over the next two years, I will be focused on continuing this important work to improve the lives of the people of Michigan. This includes leading the passage of the Farm Bill for the next five years, which defines our national food and agricultural policy,” he said.

Democrats must defend 23 Senate seats in upcoming electionsincluding those held by independent senators Kirsten Cinema (Arizona), Bernie Sanders (Vermont) and Angus King (Maine).

Republicans in the Senate only need to protect 10 seats in 2024 and they don’t have vulnerable actors who can’t win re-election.

At least two of Michigan’s most prominent Democrats Governor Gretchen Whitmer and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg who now divides his time between Washington, D.C. and his family’s home in Traverse City, Michigan, were quick to announce Thursday that they are not planning a 2024 race for Stabenow’s seat.
