Modern cuisine appeared largely thanks to the American scientist, mother of 12 children – Lillian Gilbert. Details about this REN TV director of the Design Museum Alexander Sankov.

“In America, Lillian Gilbert, a woman, a scientist who studied ergonomics and how work should be organized for women in the household, also thought about how to minimize the work of a woman. In general, this is, of course, a time of emancipation, when women begin to work on an equal footing with men, when the idea of equality, they are relevant for all continents. And therefore, similar ideas arise in different societies”, – shared the expert.

Lillian Gilbert conducted experiments in the kitchen, in particular filmed the process of cooking food on camera, and then analyzed these records, and also studied the movements in the kitchen of her family. The result of her work are examples of a practical kitchen – she invented a wastebasket with a pedal, introduced a table on wheels and shelves on the refrigerator door into kitchen use.

And how were the kitchens arranged in Rus’? What was the space for cooking in the homes of nobles and peasants? Who invented and justified the division of labor? And who do we thank for the idea of a “model kitchen” – with shelves and work surfaces? Details about the evolution of cuisine and much more – in the program “Unknown History” with Boris Ryzhov.
