UN experts call for an end to ‘brutal deaths’ of African Americans at the hands of police

recent death of two African Americans at the hands of US police caused outrage at the international level and among rights experts United Nations (UN).

This was stated by UN experts on human rights. deeply concerned about “brutal deaths” at the hands of the police of African American citizens.

The UN statement says that Keenan Anderson died in Los Angeles after being repeatedly electrocuted by police. after chasing traffic regulation, according to press reports, and Tyre Nichols in Memphis died after being severely beaten while lying on the ground.at the hands of five Memphis, Tennessee officers who have since been charged with murder and other crimes.

“The brutal deaths of Keenan Anderson and Tyre Nichols are a fresh reminder of the need to act now”said Yvonne Mokgoro, chair of the International Mechanism of Independent Experts, appointed by the UN Human Rights Council to promote racial justice and equality in the context of law enforcement.

Juan Mendez, member of the Expert Mechanism, affirmed that “while we recognize the role of less lethal options in reducing the risk of death or injury associated with police action, all use of force by officials security forces should be guided by the principles of legality, precaution, necessity, proportionality, non-discrimination and accountability.”

Morris Tidball-Beans, Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial, Summary or Arbitrary Executions, said that the use of “less lethal” weapons, such as stun guns, “continues to cause grave concern about the obligation of states to protect the right to life and the right not to be subjected to torture or other ill-treatment. These weapons can cause death, serious bodily injury and permanent disability.”

” Police and law enforcement agencies have a special responsibility to protect their citizens. and stand up for their rights,” said Alice Jill Edwards, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment. “When this primary function is suppressed by illegal and uncontrolled violence, ordinary people are afraid of their own police. In such circumstances, only community-developed solutions will do.”

Request information from the US government

experts asked the US government for detailed information on the deaths of Messrs. Anderson and Nichols, “on ongoing investigations and rules applicable to the use of less lethal weapons in relation to applicable human rights standards”, according to a statement released by the UN Human Rights Office, OHCHR.

In both cases, the experts stressed that the force used appears to have violated international standards protecting the right to life and prohibit torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment. It also falls short of the standards set out in the United Nations Code of Conduct. for Law Enforcement Officials and Basic Principles on the Use of Force and Firearms by Law Enforcement Officials.

There is a growing demand for justice in the case of Keenan Anderson, who was killed with an LAPD taser.
