The exercise reportedly began in mid-January as part of an expanded US program to prepare Ukrainian forces for combat. Ukrainians are preparing battalions for training at Grafenwöhr, but the scale was much smaller when soldiers of the Ukrainian Armed Forces were trained to use the HIMARS MLRS before.

The move to battalion-level training marked a significant expansion in US efforts to prepare and train Ukrainians for long-term war.
