HOUSTON. The apparent murder-suicide that claimed the lives of four people, including three teenage girls and the alleged shooter, shocked the Galena Park community. Two days after the tragedy, family members and authorities provided more details about the victims.
The shooting took place around 10:30 pm this Saturday at a residential building located on Second Street near the intersection of N. Main and Clinton streets.
The tragedy interrupted the holiday weekend. On Friday, the families of the murdered girls celebrated their birthday, and this Monday they planned the funeral.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez updated the case and said the two sisters and a neighbor were shot by the sisters’ mother’s boyfriend. In the first report, three sisters were believed to have died. This Monday, the sheriff said that 19-year-old Sayuri Gill and her sister Melanie Torres were found dead, Gill was pregnant, her relatives say she was six months pregnant. The sisters’ friend, 14-year-old Laisha Perez, was visiting and was also shot dead.
The boyfriend of the mother of the sisters and a 12-year-old girl, who was sexually abused by the mother’s boyfriend before letting her go, managed to save her daughter Gill and ran to the man’s house for help from a neighbor.
The girl ran out naked with her nephew in her arms. Authorities did not give a motive for the shooting, but relatives said the man, who has not been identified, became jealous after another man greeted his girlfriend, the mother of the two dead victims, and the girlfriend that she had been raped. A Twitter post from ABC 13 mentions that the suspect was identified by relatives of the victims.
The Galena Park Police Department responded to a call from a 12-year-old girl who reported that she had been sexually assaulted by her mother’s boyfriend and that the man had shot and killed other people in the house. The girl who called for help left the house naked with her one-year-old niece in her arms to ask for help from a neighbor.
When the police arrived at the scene, they found three teenage girls, aged 19, 14 and 13, shot to death. The boyfriend of the mother of the victims was also found lifeless with a gunshot wound. Police believe the man shot himself after raping a 12-year-old girl who asked for help and killing three other girls.
The 38-year-old man apparently started shooting at the girls after an argument. The man shot and killed first the 19-year-old girl and then two others before raping the 12-year-old girl.
The survivor told investigators that her mother’s boyfriend told her to leave the house after he raped her. The girl grabbed her one-year-old niece and ran naked to her neighbor for help.
According to Gonzalez, the man had a relationship with the owner of the house, who was identified as the mother of the two murdered young women. The man is reportedly not the father of any of the victims.
A sexually assaulted girl is taken to the hospital to be treated for her injuries.
This is a tragic situation that makes no sense. Investigators will try to connect all parts and our condolences to the entire family of the victims and everyone affected, as well as the entire city,” Gonzalez said.
Relatives of the victims have set up a GoFundMe account to help with funeral expenses.
