“Being neutral doesn’t mean being weak.” What will NATO do if Russia attacks Moldova?

Now Russia maintains a task force in Transnistria, headquartered in Tiraspol.

NATO Deputy Secretary General Mircea Geoana said Moldova “would not be militarily weak” if the Russian Federation tried to attack it. Newsweek writes about it.

He reminded that the Moldovan Constitution stipulates its neutral status and that this can only be changed by referendum.

“We have to acknowledge that the Republic of Moldova, after the war in Transnistria 30 years ago, had a clause in the Constitution about neutrality. That should be respected,” said Geoana.

However, to be neutral does not mean to be militarily weak.

“Being neutral doesn’t mean you don’t have the strength to defend your region and your people,” he said.

At the same time, Joana doubts that Russia has the opportunity to introduce additional forces into Transnistria. For this, the Russian Federation must occupy the whole of the south of Ukraine, including the Odessa region. The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are not currently in a position to do this.

It should be noted that Russia maintains a task force of its troops in Transnistria. The headquarters are located in the city of Tiraspol. The group is the successor of the 14th Guards United Arms Army of the USSR Armed Forces and the RF Armed Forces.

Earlier, the Russian Ministry of Defense had claimed that Ukraine would invade Transnistria. However, Moldovan authorities did not confirm this information.

On February 24, the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Ukrainian attack on Transnistria would be an attack on the Russian Federation. According to Russian diplomats, there is allegedly a significant accumulation of personnel and equipment on the Transnistria border.

Analysts from the American Institute of War Studies said Putin wanted to undermine Moldova’s state, but did not have military forces. According to experts, the Kremlin head withdrew his orders from the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs due to the observance of the principles of the UN Charter and Russia’s obligation to seek ways to resolve the Transnistria problem on the basis of Moldova’s territorial integrity.
