US intelligence fears that the uranium supplied by Russia to China for the CFR-600 reactor could be used to produce weapons-grade plutonium. Such information published Bloomberg.

The CFR-600 fast neutron nuclear reactor, built on Changbiao Island, is already ready for launch. At the same time, it has only two analogues – the Russian BN-600 and BN-800 reactors.

The uranium that serves as its fuel also comes from Russia. According to the publication, in the period from September to December 2022 alone, our country supplied China with seven times more highly enriched uranium than the United States sold in thirty years.

Because of this, US intelligence fears that after the reactor is launched, China will be able to produce weapons-grade plutonium, and over the next 12 years will quadruple the number of its nuclear warheads, thereby equaling Russia and the United States.

Beijing, on the other hand, denies accusations of using imported uranium for weapons purposes. The Chinese authorities note that the United States makes such statements only to justify the build-up of its own nuclear weapons.
