Moldovan opposition threatens Sandu to exacerbate Transnistria conflict over NATO

According to Marina Tauber, deputy leader of the Shor party, she and her supporters will demand the resignation of the President of Moldova through rallies.

Shor, Moldova’s pro-Russian opposition party, opposed NATO membership amid President Maia Sandu’s statements about a possible end to Moldova’s neutrality. This was expressed on Wednesday, March 8, by Marina Trauber, deputy leader of the Shor party, in an interview with the Russian edition of RIA Novosti.

According to the opposition, Sandu’s statements about the need to join a military alliance could destabilize the country and exacerbate the Transnistrian conflict.

“The Shor party is absolutely in favor of preserving Moldovan neutrality, and this is reflected, among other things, in our resolution adopted at the previous mass rally on February 28. And we condemn the following statements by President Maia Sandu: Tauber, Moldova’s entry into military alliances “These statements may lead to instability in the country and intensification of the Transnistrian conflict.”

According to Tauber, pressure from the opposition led to the resignation of Prime Minister Natalia Gavrlitsa. But this is not enough for the Shor party, and they will demand the resignation of the Moldovan President and his supporters in parliament.

“If we don’t want our country to go to war, we will only seek the departure of the ruling Action and Solidarity party and the resignation of President Sandu and the government through protests. The authorities must be pressured in a legal way,” Tauber said.

Protests in Moldova and escalation in Transnistria

On March 7, Moldovan television channel TV8 reported that young people who had gone to Turkey to prepare for the uprisings in Chisinau by the Shor party returned to the country.

“Our film crew recorded a large number of athletes leaving the airport and heading towards the minibuses waiting for them in the parking lot in the area. Some of them tried to cover their faces, while others disappeared to avoid the camera lenses,” the media said.

The day before, on 6 March, language protests were held in Chisinau. Protesters opposed the renaming of the Moldovan language to Romanian. Journalists learned that many protesters did not speak the state language at all.

According to Andrei Yusov, the Russian military unit in the PMR can take a provocation decision against Ukraine. But everything depends on the decision to be made in the Kremlin.

On March 1, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that Russia cannot attack Moldova due to its territorial distance and Ukraine’s location between the two states.

Moldovan Ambassador to Ukraine Valeriu Chiveri said on March 1 that the withdrawal of Russian troops from the unrecognized Transnistrian Republic of Moldavia (PMR) would depend on Ukraine’s success on the battlefield.

On March 1, Natalia Gumenyuk, head of the Press Center for the Joint Coordination of the Defense Forces of Southern Ukraine, stated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine is ready for provocations from Pridnestrovie, but so far there has been no threat. Ukrainian defenders are closely monitoring the situation in the region.

Also on March 1, the Moldovan government responded to accusations of the Russian Foreign Ministry about “provocations” by the Ukrainian Armed Forces. They stated that they were monitoring the situation in the region and could not confirm the claims of the Russian side.

On February 28, a political action called “People’s Movements” was held in the center of Chisinau, organized by the parties “Shor” and PACE. Protesters demanded that the country’s government pay the gas, heating and electricity bills of last winter season.

On February 21, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean said that Russia plans to seize the airport in Chisinau to transport its troops to seize power in the republic.

Earlier, on February 20, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that Kiev is ready to help Chisinau if Russia attacks Moldova.

Recall, the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky said on February 9 that the Ukrainian intelligence had information about Moscow’s plans to seize Moldova. The head of state handed over all available information about the intentions of the Russian Federation to the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu.
