“Guilty”: politicians in Italian town put in a cage and lowered into the river (video)

Such punishment is a long tradition called “Tonka”. This is the so-called repentance process where officials and famous people are sent to the general court for disgracing themselves during the year.

In the small Italian town of Trento, when a politician does something wrong to the residents, he is locked in a cage and lowered into the river. A quick dive is more for fun than hurting anyone. Reported by Ladbible.

The cage is lowered for just a second, which is considered a funny way of making a politician realize his mistake.

Punishment for leaders is not uncommon. Many parts of the world have their own traditions. The ritual in Trento is called “Tonka”. It is part of the Vigilian festival, which the city celebrates in the second half of June each year.

Diving into the water is one of the main events during the celebration. This is the so-called repentance process where the city’s politicians and celebrities are “courted” for disgracing themselves throughout the year.

Punishment is a way to publicly ridicule leaders who do not keep their word. Not only statesmen but also local celebrities are subjected to such a process if they somehow degrade the city they love.

Tonka is traditionally performed on the last Sunday before June 26. It took place on 19 June in 2022. It could happen on June 25 this year.
